Money and tips

Value Added Tax (VAT) is levied on all products in South Africa at a 15% rate. Products that are not consumed can be reimbursed to foreign tourists when leaving the country (food, fuel or services, for example, are not refundable). You will need to present all product invoices, passports and your printed E-TKT (showing the date of departure from South Africa) to the tax refund office (before checking in) at Cape Town or Johannesburg airports. Random inspection of products will be done (keep the most valuable products in carry-on or within easy reach). Upon inspection, the refund will be made through a debit card. The average refund ends up in the range of 10% of the total value of the products after discounts. For more information please visit www.taxrefunds.co.za
